Isolation
Explanation: Isolation refers to attempts by one person to cut off their partner’s access to resources such as meaningful relationships, freedom to move, and chances to improve their life.
- Preventing Social Connections: Connections to cultural and religious institutions are important sources of social support for many newcomers. Abusers might stop their partners from connecting with important cultural and religious institutions.
- Exacerbating Isolation: Being in a new country, unfamiliar with the culture, and lacking social support can make women feel even more isolated and trapped.
- Limiting Opportunities for Intervention: This isolation can limit chances for help, making women feel stuck in their relationships and new communities.
- Weakening social supports: The abuser might prevent new friendships and sabotage old relationships with friends and families.
Example: An abuser might:
- May inform the individual that she is not loved by her family
- May exaggerate the dangers of going outside or talking to others
